Did You Know That Genetics Can Play a Significant Role in Neurodegenerative Diseases Such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Frontotemporal Dementia?
At Kensington Senior Living, Our Promise is to love and care for your family as we do our own. And that includes you. To that end, we have built strong relationships with expert professionals who keep us current with the latest advances in care, management and treatment of conditions that affect seniors and their families.
That is why we are honored to partner with The Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care at UCLA to present this educational webinar on genetics, risk factors, and the signs of neurodegenerative brain diseases.
Some of these disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease are often caused by inheritance of gene mutations. During this roundtable discussion you will learn what genes predispose you and your family to brain disease. Our experts will discuss the risk factors and pro-active role you and your family can play when facing such genetic mutations; and you will learn about the groundbreaking discoveries and latest advances in research to combat these diseases.
Kacie Deters, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, The Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Care at UCLA. Dr. Kacie Deters earned her Ph.D. in Medical Neuroscience at the Indiana University School of Medicine focusing on genetic and imaging characteristics of tauopathies, including Alzheimer’s disease. Kacie completed her first postdoc in 2021 at Stanford University with Dr. Elizabeth Mormino where she first began to explore ethnic and racial disparities existed in AD biomarkers. COVID hit, and Kacie decided to take a second postdoc, which she completed in 2022 at the University of California, San Diego in the Department of Neurosciences with Dr. Sarah Banks. While at UCSD, Kacie expanded her training to understand racial bias that exists in neuropsychological assessments. While at UCLA, Kacie’s lab will focus is on ethnic and racial disparities in predictors (genetic; neuroimaging; neuropsychological assessments; social/environmental factors) for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in older adults, primarily from the Black community.
Jessica Rexach, MD Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Neurology at UCLA and John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation Endowed Chair. Dr. Jessica Rexach completed the undergraduate at Cornell, the MSTP physician scientist training program at UCLA and Caltech, medical residency at Cedars Sinai and the WLAVA, and a neurology residency and neurogenetics R25 fellowship at UCLA. Jessica completed her postdoctoral fellowship in Neurogenetics with Professor Daniel Geschwind at UCLA; and her PhD on intracellular glycosylation in neuronal signaling at Caltech with Professor Linda Hsieh-Wilson. Her lab combines multiomic, single-cell and genomics methods with experimental disease modeling to study neuronal-glial and neuroimmune mechanisms in dementia with the goal of identifying effective therapeutics.

Increase knowledge about dementia and develop skills to connect with and better care for your loved one
There’s no question that memory loss is a family affair. Those living with it and those who love and care for them confront the continual need to adjust the way they relate and communicate. Finding ways to make these challenges more manageable is essential to enhancing the quality of life for all involved.
Positive Approach to Care® (PAC) is a dementia care philosophy developed by Teepa Snow, a renowned advocate for people living with dementia. PAC is an ability-based movement that increases the understanding of why dementia is happening, and it offers practical, actionable techniques to support those living with brain change in a positive and respectful way.
After the workshop, chat with our frontline team and learn how they can best support you and your loved one. Enjoy summery light bites made by our Executive Chef Val, sip to a glass of wine and pair it with a selection of cheeses. Tours are available following the workshop.
At The Kensington , we promise to love and care for your family as we do our own. So, in addition to our thoughtfully designed and clinically comprehensive programs, we partner with dementia innovators to share the latest information and caregiving strategies that improve everyday interactions. Because there is power in knowledge and comfort in community, we encourage you to join us, no matter where you are in your search for care. We are here for you.
For questions about this event, reach out to Heather Rich, Director of Community Relations, at hrich@kensingtonsl.com.
Meaghan Dingwall, MHA, board-certified dementia practitioner, and PAC Certified Coach, is the Connections Memory Care Supervision at The Kensington Reston.

Join The Kensington Reston and Aging & Dementia Expert Dr. Anya Parpura, MD, PhD for this interactive discussion to better understand why your loved one could be agitated, what it means and how to work through it. June’s topic is Navigating Ambivalent Feelings as a Caregiver.
This interactive group discussion is designed to help you understand and deal with both sides of caregiving, providing it and receiving it. At the beginning of each meeting, Dr. Anya will provide a brief educational presentation to start us off on thinking and sharing experiences. However, discussion and sharing is not limited to the introductory topic. We want you to feel comfortable and safe sharing whatever is on your mind.
Caregiving crosses all illnesses, conditions and health concerns. Providing care for loved ones often leads to feeling intimidated, confused, frustrated and exhausted. Caring for people with dementia has been shown to have the highest caregiver burden. At the same time, the ones we care for also have their own sets of challenges and emotional journeys that make this journey ever changing. Sharing this burden can relieve this stress and hearing from others that are going through similar journeys can provide you with solutions as well.
Dr. Aleksandra (Anya) Parpura, MD, PhD, an expert in aging and dementia, will lead our Caregiver Connect program. Dr. Anya is the president of Aging Perspectives, Inc., the Scientific Review Officer for variety of biomedical programs, an adjunct professor at The Catholic University of America, and a faculty member at the Washington School of Psychiatry. Dr. Parpura brings to us vast knowledge, helpful tips and a kind heart.

Stay movin’ with The Kensington Reston at Exercise for Parkinson’s! We’re proud to partner with the Parkinson’s Foundation of the National Capital Area to offer a weekly, in-person series to bring people together impacted by Parkinson’s Disease.
We invite you and your loved one to visit us on our courtyard at The Kensington Reston and participate in various physical exercises aimed at improving posture, balance and circulation while also increasing strength, muscle control and mobility. Join us each week to find the physical and emotional support that you need.
Our Promise at The Kensington is to love and care for your family as we do our own. And we do. We are here for you – skilled, prepared and ready to participate fully in your care journey. As specialists in all aspects of Assisted Living and Memory Care, we offer services and programs that are thoughtfully designed, clinically comprehensive and highly personalized. By offering three levels of Memory Care, we improve quality of life for our residents to the greatest extent possible. And couples are welcome, even if their care needs differ. We’re standing by, eager to listen and ready to help.
